From Mossel Bay to the National Stage: A Month of Opportunity for The Surfer Kids

Every wave tells a story, and for the young surfers at The Surfer Kids Non-Profit, every early morning paddle, every training session, and every competition is another step towards something bigger. This past month has been a powerful reminder of what can happen when determination meets opportunity.

A Dream Years in the Making

One of the biggest moments in our programme's history came when Inam Falteni was selected as a non-travelling reserve for the South African Junior Squad for the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships later this year.

For Inam, this achievement is the result of years of commitment. Since joining The Surfer Kids, he has embraced every opportunity to learn, improve, and challenge himself in the water. Watching him earn recognition at a national level is something our entire Surfer Kids family is incredibly proud of.

His selection is also a milestone for our organisation. It shows that young people from our community can compete alongside South Africa's best when they are given the opportunity, guidance, and support to grow.

Learning with South Africa's Best

Following his selection, Inam travelled to Ballito to attend the South African Junior Squad High Performance Training Camp before competing in the O'Neill SMTH Shapes Rookie Rippers.

The week was filled with world-class coaching, challenging surf conditions, and the chance to train alongside the country's top junior surfers. These experiences cannot be replicated in a normal training environment and will play an important role in Inam's continued development.

Although competitive surfing always brings its share of wins and disappointments, the experience itself was invaluable. Every heat surfed, every coaching session attended, and every conversation with athletes and coaches has helped prepare Inam for the next chapter of his surfing journey.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of Surfing South Africa and Bitcoin Ekasi. Their belief in our programme continues to create opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach for many of our young athletes.

Building Champions at Home

While Inam was gaining experience on the national stage, the rest of our programme continued to grow back home in Mossel Bay. Our third Surfer Kids Surf Series event brought together another fantastic group of young surfers at The Point for a day of competition, learning, and community.

For many of our younger surfers, these events are their first introduction to competitive surfing. They learn far more than how to catch waves. They learn discipline, resilience, sportsmanship, and confidence—qualities that stay with them long after the contest is over.

The Surf Series has become an important part of our athlete development pathway, giving our groms regular opportunities to measure their progress, challenge themselves, and fall even more in love with surfing.

We are incredibly grateful to every volunteer who gives their time and to Eden Surf Riders Association for their continued support in helping make these events possible.

Creating Opportunities Beyond Surfing

At The Surfer Kids, we believe that developing young people extends far beyond the beach.

Through our ongoing partnership with Bitcoin Ekasi, our surfers and the wider community continue to benefit from educational opportunities that encourage critical thinking, financial literacy, and personal growth. This past month, Bitcoin Ekasi hosted a community event at T.M. Ndanda Primary School Hall featuring indigenous games, interactive learning, and a Bitcoin-themed Spelling Bee while recruiting students for the next My First Bitcoin Diploma cohort starting in August.

Beyond our local community, Bitcoin Ekasi also continued sharing its work on international stages, including BTC Prague and BTC Nairobi, demonstrating how grassroots initiatives in South Africa are creating sustainable opportunities through education and circular economies. We are proud to partner with an organisation that shares our belief that lasting change comes from empowering people with knowledge, opportunity, and practical skills.

Looking Ahead

As we prepare for the months ahead, including our upcoming Jeffreys Bay training camp and the next events on the South African Junior Tour, we are reminded that success is never built overnight. It is built through thousands of waves, countless hours of coaching, unwavering support from our community, and young people who refuse to stop believing in themselves.

Every child who joins The Surfer Kids starts with a surfboard, but they leave with so much more—confidence, discipline, friendships, purpose, and the belief that their future can be bigger than they ever imagined.
